Hawaii Has Left Its Mark

Posted by Ryan on Sunday, June 17, 2007

I thought it would be fun to list some of the ways that Hawaii has left its mark on our little Ohana, be they good or bad.

  • Hyrum knows what beach sand and red dirt tastes like.
  • Jordan won't wear shoes.
  • Instead of looking for the nearest bathroom, Tanner just looks for the nearest bush or tree. (And Tamie points it out to him because it just means one less toilet she has to clean.)
  • Ty snorkels (and loves it).
  • Tanner and Ty can dog-paddle without their lifejackets.
  • Jordan can swim "by self" (with a lifejacket, of course).
  • Tamie loves the beach, itchy sand and all.
  • All our kids take showers now. (Baths don't work when you're got sand sticking to your skin.) Ty even takes a shower and washes up by himself. Hyrum loves the shower.
  • Hyrum and Ty know what a really bad sunburn feels like.
  • Ryan's a lot more comfortable wearing shorts and an aloha shirt.
  • Sharing a home with mice and large cockroaches doesn't bother us (as much) anymore. Our mouse's name is Mortimer.
  • We can distinguish a baby cry from the sounds of sea birds nesting. (And that's harder that you think!)
  • We'll never make plain ol' pancakes again. Banana and/or coconut pancakes forevermore.
  • Plumeria has become one of our favorite smells.
  • Ryan knows how to break open a fresh coconut, newly fallen from a tree, and extract its meat.
  • We've learned to ration our milk, cheese, and yogurt. (Guess what! They're not as vital to your health as the dairy marketing people want to you believe.)
  • We've learned that rain isn't all that devastating to your day plans.
  • Each of us has learned to feel and recognize the spirit of Aloha (or, as Jordan says "Hullo-ha").
  • We've learned the importance of showing your love to neighbors and friends, not just having love for them.
